Resumes Essentials

Before you write, take time to do a self-assessment on paper. Make an outline of all the sections of the resume that fit your credentials.

Content of Your Resume

Name, Address, Telephone, e-mail address
   
All your contact information should go at the top of your resume.
   
Avoid nicknames.
   
Add your e-mail address. Many employers will find it useful.


Objective or Summary

An objective or summary tells potential employers the sort of work you are expecting to do.
   
Be specific about the job you want. For example: To obtain an entry-level position within the marketing industry which requires strong analytical and presentation skills.
   
Tailor your objective for every job you seek.


Education

Fresh graduates without lots of working experience should list their educational background first.
   
Listing your most recent educational information first.
   
Including your degree and major or concentration.
   
Mention academic honors.


Work Experience

Chronicle your most recent job first.
   
Including Name of organization / Position held / Dates of employment.
   
Describe your primary responsibilities and achievements.


References

Contact your references and request permission to use them before you give their names to a potential employer.
   
No need to include your reference information on your resume.
   
You may note at the bottom of your resume: “Reference Upon Request ”.


Resume Proofread

Once you have completed all of your work experiences, edit, rewrite, replace redundant words, and tighten prose.
   
- Proofread your resume several times to ensure 100% accuracy. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to proofread it, too.
